The scramble and political quagmire within the circus of the Transitional Federal government seems unending at every appointment of cabinet. Of the three Somalia governments from 2000 to date, none was able to ameliorate the abhorring situation in Somalia.
It was in 2000 when Abdikasim Salat Hassan and his premier Ali khalif Galeyr could not concur. A long dispute ensued culminating in the collapse of the transitional federal government after Galeyr was voted as not viable for premiership and a second prime minister, Hassan Abshir Farah, could not be at par with Abdikasim. The subsequent failure and collapse of the TFG was the downside of the longstanding scuffle.
It was wondrous enough that the International community doesn’t tire from its ambiguous interference with Somalia. The International community under the auspices of the UN hurried to create another government for Somalia in an attempt to derail the constructive reconciliation of Somalia. A government under the umbrella of Abdulaahi Yussuf was formed. As the norm was, an all see conflict simmered between Abdullahi Yussuf and his Prime Minister Ali Mohamed Gedi forcing the premier Gedi to go down the drain. As if a new face will do more good than harm, President Yussuf appointed Nur Hassan Hussein as a prime minister. The inevitable happened where Nur Hassan Hussein and Abdullahi Yussuf got involved in a tussle. This time a different turn of events took place. President Yussuf became the one thrown out of the window for the simple reason of the proverbial deduction that says “give way for the mighty to pass”.
In 2009 in Djibouti, a unity government was unanimously elected by the Parliamentarians headed by Shariff Sheikh Ahmed. Shariff appointed Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmake to be his prime minster. As many would have expected, in the nick of time, the bamboozling game between them became unpredictable and they split up resulting in the resignation of the premier.
A second prime minister for the Shariff’s government was put in place after a long contemplation, a man they say can bring the change deprived of Somalia, Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed. He is a man who appeared in the political arena in rarity, perhaps not at all. But with his experience, optimism is expressed on his potentiality.
The move the prime minister made in the creation of a government startled many and sparked sentiments that has started to unweave enmity in the politicians and the tribes in Somalia. It is a fact engraved in the Somalis that everything is measured in the basis of tribe. A pro-government group expressed their disappointment on how the ministerial posts were allocated. What added salt to the injury was the expectation of many former ministers who were expecting to find their names in the list of the newly appointed minister but did not appear anywhere. The erstwhile ministers were having continuous meetings behind the scenes. God knows what they are up to. But it is an issue the president is vigilant about and expecting the worst.
Two days ago, the assistant minister for planning Abdiaziz Lafta Gareen resigns on claims that his clan was demeaned and given a post that is inferior. It was only ten days ago when Farmaajo unveiled his cabinet and lamentations have already started. Today, the assistant minister for Higher Education Feysal Omar Guuleed resigned from his position on the same note. This is the second resignation since Farmaajo formed his cabinet ministers. There are growing fears many cabinet ministers may follow suit.
Many government ex-officials are revealing the extent of graft and corruption of the top leaders of the TFG. The president and speaker are said to have received large sums of money from persons in the Diasporas in exchange for ministerial post. Some are for the idea of publicizing and lampooning the top leaders in the media. If this saga moves forward and measures to expose the TFG leaders are carried on, it will be the worst nightmares a politician will encounter in the history of Somalia.
There seems to be a hidden puzzle of political conflict and unrest in the TFG as any incident leads to another. The question is what is the use a government is so keen in realizing its own interest at the expense of citizens? What change can it bring when there are fresh disputes at every crack of dawn? How can they reach out to other problems when they are backstabbing one another?
