Mogadishu Population prefer a democratic government over an Islamic one, survey reveals.

An opinion poll conducted by «Mogadishu Media House Foundation », based in the Somali capital, showed that the Somalis, especially residents of the capital Mogadishu, prefer a democratic government instead of an Islamic government, like that advocated by the armed Islamic groups in the future
The survey, which targeted a thousand residents of Mogadishu and Afgooye also showed that Somalis are strongly opposed to the control of insurgents on the ruling.
There were different views of respondents about the African Union peacekeepers in Somalia as some of them said they are friendly forces who came to help and establish peace in Somalia, and also to protect and support the institutions of the Transitional Federal Government TFG and to promote dialogue among Somalis, while others consider them as forces hostile to people because of the indiscriminate shelling of civilians and destroying properties of the Somalis
About 67% of respondents said that Somalis must support and stand by the Transitional Government to overcome this difficult period, while around 88% affirmed their recognition of the transitional government that enjoys legitimacy.
And the structure of government, favored by the Somalis in the future, by about 68% reported that they prefer a democratic government elected freely and fairly by the people, while about 23% preferred an Islamic state in Somalia and control in accordance with Islamic principles, while some 6% desired a strong leader to rule the country as a dictator, even if he is not elected in accordance with the principles of democracy.
Regarding the presence of the African Union peacekeepers (AMISOM) in Somalia, half of the respondents mentioned  the importance of peacekeeping and protecting and supporting the institutions of government to achieve stability in the country, and also to encourage dialogue among Somalis, and confirmed the effectiveness of the African Union forces in support of the transitional institutions, to achieve stability in the country and promote dialogue and reconciliation, and also support the provision of humanitarian assistance, and create a suitable environment for reconstruction and long-term development in Somalia.
As for the opposition groups, including Al Shabaab, 75% of respondents said that they are strongly opposed to the idea of the insurgents being in control; because the current opposition does not value and think about bettering people’s lives in the future, and whether most of the armed militias protect the people, about 67% said No, stressing that Somalis should not support the opposition groups.
About the impact of war and conflict between the Somali parties in Mogadishu on the lives of citizens,  56% of those who had responded to the opinion poll said they had lost friends because of the violence, and 38% said they have lost some of their relatives, and 30% have been displaced from their homes by the fighting, and 23% physically injured by the fighting, and 23% had their education discontinued because of violence, and 21% were not able to get jobs , and 14% had lost friends or family members.
And what can be done to resolve and end the protracted conflict in Somalia, about 48% noted reconciliation between Somali factions, while 3% favored cessation of foreign interference, and 65% of the respondents said that they can not individually help stop the violence in the country. And about 52% said that there is no solution for the problem of Somalia to attain peace.
The survey also sought to know the popularity of radio stations in Mogadishu.
Radio Mogadishu became the first popular radio, and radio Shabelle came second, followed by Radio Bar-kulan, BBC, Somali Service, and VOA Somali Service.
